Flowers In The House Of Scents: August 2012

Todays FITH are brought to you by the whole damn family. We hunted and gathered flowers and herbs with the Lab first thing this morning. Though eager to finish her walk and get home to breakfast she allowed us to poke around in alleys and friends yards to get a handful of blooming mint here and a bunch of autumn blooming clematis there.

Add to that sedum, hydrangea, butterfly bush and allium from our garden and voila the house begins to smell like we live in the country. Even the kittens are sniffing at the fallen leaves on the kitchen floor..

I smuggled a few teddy bear sunflowers out of the shop yesterday.

I'll do the time if necessary. Pure happiness right there.

We filled a old bottle and a little mug with some clippings and placed them high above the kittens heads.

Barring any crashes in the middle of the night.....

And I placed one of my favorites, a reblooming, heavily scented white iris next to the bed.

Thought better of it and moved in onto a dresser.

Where it still sits.  I think.  I haven't been in there for hours.

The little ones followed me from room, jumping up to smell and bat around a few flowers. Their favorite scent was on GG's arm from where she weeded a patch of cat mint.

Believe me there is not one leaf of that herb in the house. I hope.

Though Gus does appear to be a little bit out of it.

If I can wake him up we hope to trot round to your houses and see what you've got.

Flowers I mean, not cat nip.

xo Jane

    1. It's always an embarrassment of riches here. As the hostess I have to be over the top, no?

  7. I can practically smell your house - and it's wonderful! Love the teddy bears and the kittens, of course. Thanks for the push. It was fun to find the stragglers and you are making me think about things for next year that might make it thru August.

    Happy day. thanks!

  8. Those kittens are making you creative....I sometimes hear my cat getting into things in the middle of the night...naughty little things. Your arrangements are lovely. I especially like that Teddy Bear sunflower. I've never seen that before.

  11. I love the wild randomness of what you collected (at least it appears random--maybe that's an artful florist technique). I need to do more of that--look past the blooms at the greens.

    1. It certainly seemed random when I went to arrange them and it was shucking rain so what I had inside was what I got to use.

Sometimes at work we don't have enough of a particular color or type of flower for a customers request. That's when we seem to get the most creative!

  16. I grew Lemon Aura sunflowers one year that looked kinda similar to your teddy bears. I will bring in some things from the garden this evening for FITH.

  19. Everything looks so gorgeous (as always) Jane. I think those flowers where you gather a little here and a little there are absolutely the best. As for those teddy sunflowers - I don't think I've heard of them before, but yes, definitely worth doing the time for. Your babies look cat-nipped out! Love that they're balls of insurmountable energy one minute, completely zonked out the next. My FITH are kind of 'at the store' - hope that still counts!

  25. Jen suggested I visit your blog, so I have. And you've charmed me with your cats. So, I guess I'll look forward to reading of your interests. Sometimes I write of flowers, too, out here in Idaho. http://lettersfromshenaniganvalleyidaho.blogspot.com/

  26. I want an alley. We had them in California. It's where folks let the weeds fly and the invasives unfurl. Plenty of foraging in them thar alleys. How do you keep your house so damn clean?

  27. Dear Jane, oh, those cats, they are stealing the picture! I love the simplicity of the clippings in the old bottle.
